Understanding the Metaverse and Its Role in the Future of Virtual Meetings
Background
Metaverse represents the next generation of the internet ecosystem – virtual worlds, offering a higher level of immersion and interactivity than previous iterations. The users in this new digital virtual world interact using 3D and virtual reality technology. It is often synonymous with “Web 4.0” and is used interchangeably with the concept of virtual spaces. These spaces allow users to carry out various activities such as working, shopping, socializing, and playing.
The Rise of Virtual Conferencing Applications During the COVID-19 Pandemic
The global pandemic saw the use of virtual conferencing applications surge in popularity. Platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams became the go-to solution for remote communication, and even after the pandemic, their usage continues to rise. Recently, Meta (formerly Facebook) released the Meta Horizons Workrooms virtual meeting room application, touting it as the first step towards building an "enterprise metaverse." Other virtual and mixed reality collaboration applications such as Microsoft Mesh, Mozilla Hubs, Glue, and VRChat have also emerged.
Tackling “Zoom Fatigue” and Innovating Workplace Collaboration Through APV's Virtual Meeting Room Application
Many articles discuss the challenges of "zoom fatigue" and highlight how providing a layer of abstraction for users from constant video interaction and increasing mobility can help. While there is a growing interest in exploring innovative ways to improve workplace collaboration and productivity beyond traditional instant messaging and video calls, APV has taken the lead.
Leveraging a multi-platform development workflow, APV's Emerging Technology Lab created a virtual reality program that replicates a boardroom setting. This program uses the Android OS deployment, a Visual Studio software developer environment, and a Unity3D game engine. The users can join a virtual lobby with their Meta Quest headsets and communicate with each other using voice-over-IP technology. Additionally, the users can choose to type out notes or announcements on a virtual whiteboard.
The Future of Virtual Collaboration and Productivity Tools in Enterprise Space
Currently Web 4.0 and the Metaverse are gaining momentum as the new benchmarks for internet connectivity, and remote work is becoming more prevalent, there is a growing demand for immersive productivity and collaboration tools. These tools can be customized to meet the specific needs of each organization. It's clear that virtual conferencing and collaboration applications are set to become an integral part of the enterprise sphere.
